Chargers vs Lions Week #16: Breaking Down The O-Line Film

BD Film Chargers

The San Diego Chargers lost to the Detroit Lions, 10-38. The San Diego Chargers have fallen to 7-8 on the year, while the Lions improve to 10-5.

It is a shame that we didn’t get to see more run blocking in the Lions game. Most all the linemen, and even the tight ends, were doing a pretty good job against a stout Lions’ defensive front four. But the Chargers got behind early, and ended up passing the ball, a lot.

The remarkable thing was that the Lions got up early on the Chargers. That usually means the defense can pin their ears back and come after the quarterback because they know the other team must start throwing more. But the line still did a decent job pass blocking.

The Chargers didn’t lose this game due to the offensive line play. In fact, they lost despite some good line play.

Jared Gaither ends the day with a 95% run assignment grade and a 91% and +2 pass assignment grade. Gaither gets highlighted again because he did a good job at left tackle…and it raises the question of whether the Chargers will try and retain Jared’s services for the 2012 season.

Let’s take a look at the rest of those grades…

Chargers vs Ravens Week #15: Breaking Down The O-Line Film

BD Film Chargers

The San Diego Chargers beat the Baltimore Ravens on Monday Night Football, 34-14.

Sorry for the late post. I got a little behind from some holiday festivities. Hope some of you still enjoy the late breakdown.

This week Jeromey Clary had a pretty good game. Usually he excels at run blocking and sometimes has trouble with pass protection. Against the Ravens, however, he has a solid day. Still not an all-pro…but better.

Clary ends the game with a 92% and +1 run assignment grade and a 83% and -1 pass assignment grade. He gives up one sack in the first half but holds his own on most every other snap.

Chargers vs Bills Week #14: Breaking Down The O-Line Film

BD Film Chargers

The San Diego Chargers beat the Buffalo Bills, 37-10. The Chargers move to 6-7 on the season, and are 5-5 within the division.

If you really like to see offensive lineman drive defenders off the ball…then go back and watch Louis Vasquez and Jeromey Clary in the first quarter of this game. They get some combo drive blocks going that are refreshing. If you can’t get excited about offensive lineman dominating defenders…then you don’t really like football.

Jared Gaither has a solid day against the Bills and recorded an 85% run assignment grade and a 96% pass assignment grade with a +5 dominance score. That is pretty good for a guy they brought in just last week.

Chargers vs Jaguars Week #13: Breaking Down The O-Line Film

BD Film Chargers

The San Diego Chargers beat the Jacksonville Jaguars, 38-14. The Chargers move to 5-7 on the season and the Jaguars fall to 3-9.

San Diego appeared to start slow, but by the end of the 3rd quarter the game was well in hand. The makeshift offensive line saw the additions of Jared Gaither at right tackle, Tyronne Green returns to left guard, Louis Vasquez returns to right guard, and Colin Baxter as the center for a number of reps in the first half.

Vasquez had some flashes of what he had been doing before he left, which was dominate defenders. But he appeared to have some trouble from time to time. He ended up on the ground about 3 times from simply stumbling…possibly still some lingering ankle problems.

This week, Jared Gaither ends the game with a 75% run assignment grade, +1 dominance score, and a 87% pass assignment grade, -2 dominance score.

Chargers vs Raiders Week #10: Breaking Down The O-Line Film

BD Film Chargers

The San Diego Chargers lost to the Oakland Raiders last Thursday, 17-24. The Chargers drop to 4-5 on the year as the Raiders improve to 5-4.

I have to admit, this was one of the most difficult films I have graded in the past 2 years. The Chargers offensive line, which was decimated by injuries, where getting beat play after play in the 4th quarter. Well, I had to grit my teeth the entire way through and then burned the tape when I was done…but here it is.

Nick Hardwick ends up being the top blocker for the game. He ends the day with a 92% run blocking assignment grade and a +0 power score. His pass blocking ended up at 88%.

Chargers vs Packers Week #9: Breaking Down The O-Line Film

BD Film Chargers

The San Diego Chargers lost to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, 38-45. The Chargers move to 4-4 on the year and still retain a tie for the AFC West lead.

The Packers’ stout defensive front was projected to be a challenge for the Chargers’ offensive line, and they didn’t disappoint. The offensive line recorded their lowest run blocking grades this season (as a group). It was apparent throughout the game that Green Bay’s defensive tackles were going big and strong, and were going to be difficult to block.

Louis Vasquez ended the day with a 94% assignment score in pass protection and a +3 power score. Of all the offensive lineman, he was victimized the least, and came away from the game with more “wins” in the trenches than his defender…which can be seen by his dominance score..

Chargers vs Kansas City Week #8: Breaking Down The O-Line Film

BD Film Chargers

The Chargers lose to the Kansas City Chiefs, 20-23. If it could go wrong, it probably did at some point this past Monday. The Chargers ended the day with 12 penalties for 105 yards, 2 interceptions, 2 fumbles lost…the last one being the death blow. Their red zone efficiency was only 25% and they had the ball over 29 minutes and didn’t come away with a win.

A couple of lineman had rough days pass blocking: Marcus McNiell and Jeromy Clary. The Chargers passed so much that their assingment grades ended up being respectable. And depending on what play you watched them on…they might have been looking pretty good. But on key plays, especially if Tamba Hali was on them, they struggled.

I cover all the AFC West teams, grade all the O-Line film. And I can tell you that Tamba has brought havoc on every team he has faced. The man is a legitimate pro bowl player, and must be considered when evaluating how the offensive line did. The issue that I had in this game was that it is no secret that Tamba is a threat. Yet, the Chargers continued to only use one blocker on him many times. Yes, the Chargers are the team that puts more receivers out than any other AFC West team. Yes, the Chargers usually leave only 5 players to block for their quarterback (unlike all the other AFC West teams). But if one man is that much of a disruption…then you need to keep somebody in to combo block on him.

Let’s take a look at the O-Line scores for the game…
