Kansas City Chiefs Roster Breakdown for 2012: Offensive Line

Competition Needed Chiefs

Throughout the season, Pro Football Spotlight has been breaking down every play of every game to bring the fan a more accurate, in depth analysis of the offensive line for each AFC West team. We have attempted to bring you an unbiased, offensive lineman friendly, view of what is going on in the trenches. We hope these breakdowns have helped you understand the value of EVERY offensive lineman…not just the All-Pro players.

The reviews have also provided us with a good starting point in analyzing what positions might need to be upgraded for the next season. We at PFS believe if a team is not getting better, then they are getting worse. Because we guarantee you, the teams in the rest of the divisions are trying to get better.

This article will attempt to take a critical look at each position on the offensive line, suggest minor changes or radical changes, and evaluate the potential of the offensive line in 2012.

Chargers vs Lions Week #16: Breaking Down The O-Line Film

The San Diego Chargers lost to the Detroit Lions, 10-38. The San Diego Chargers have fallen to 7-8 on the year, while the Lions improve to 10-5.

It is a shame that we didn’t get to see more run blocking in the Lions game. Most all the linemen, and even the tight ends, were doing a pretty good job against a stout Lions’ defensive front four. But the Chargers got behind early, and ended up passing the ball, a lot.

The remarkable thing was that the Lions got up early on the Chargers. That usually means the defense can pin their ears back and come after the quarterback because they know the other team must start throwing more. But the line still did a decent job pass blocking.

The Chargers didn’t lose this game due to the offensive line play. In fact, they lost despite some good line play.

Jared Gaither ends the day with a 95% run assignment grade and a 91% and +2 pass assignment grade. Gaither gets highlighted again because he did a good job at left tackle…and it raises the question of whether the Chargers will try and retain Jared’s services for the 2012 season.

Let’s take a look at the rest of those grades…

The Denver Broncos lost to the Buffalo Bills, 14-40. The Broncos move to 8-7 on the season while the Bills improve to 6-9.

The Denver coaching staff is obviously becoming more confident with their offensive line. Throughout the course of the game, the tight ends and backs were rarely used to help in protecting the quarterback.

Some of that change is pass protection philosophy is no doubt due to Tebow’s ability to avoid defenders…but it appears to also be a vote of confidence in the offensive line.

Chris Kuper ends his day with a 91% and +2 run blocking grade and a 96% and +2 pass assignment grade. He has a solid game a the way around for the second week in a row.

Chargers vs Ravens Week #15: Breaking Down The O-Line Film

BD Film Chargers

The San Diego Chargers beat the Baltimore Ravens on Monday Night Football, 34-14.

Sorry for the late post. I got a little behind from some holiday festivities. Hope some of you still enjoy the late breakdown.

This week Jeromey Clary had a pretty good game. Usually he excels at run blocking and sometimes has trouble with pass protection. Against the Ravens, however, he has a solid day. Still not an all-pro…but better.

Clary ends the game with a 92% and +1 run assignment grade and a 83% and -1 pass assignment grade. He gives up one sack in the first half but holds his own on most every other snap.

Broncos vs Patriots Week #15: Breaking Down The O-Line Film

BD Film Broncos copy

The Denver Broncos lose to the New England Patriots, 23-41. The Broncos are still atop the AFC West by 1 game with an 8-6 record.

If Denver fans didn’t know already, they now know that the Broncos don’t play well when they have to overcome a lot of points. Denver’s offense just isn’t ready for that, yet. Keep the opponents close until the 4th quarter…and the Broncos are dangerous.

As far as AFC West standards, PFS grades all of the AFC West lineman, the Bronco’s offensive line did an average job. No offensive lineman really had a stellar day…but no one really laid an egg, either.

Chris Kuper ends his day with a 83% run assignment grade with a +1 dominance score, and a 92% pass assignment grade.

Let’s take a look at the rest of those grades…

Chargers vs Bills Week #14: Breaking Down The O-Line Film

BD Film Chargers

The San Diego Chargers beat the Buffalo Bills, 37-10. The Chargers move to 6-7 on the season, and are 5-5 within the division.

If you really like to see offensive lineman drive defenders off the ball…then go back and watch Louis Vasquez and Jeromey Clary in the first quarter of this game. They get some combo drive blocks going that are refreshing. If you can’t get excited about offensive lineman dominating defenders…then you don’t really like football.

Jared Gaither has a solid day against the Bills and recorded an 85% run assignment grade and a 96% pass assignment grade with a +5 dominance score. That is pretty good for a guy they brought in just last week.

Let’s take a look at the rest of those grades…
