The San Diego Chargers lost to the Detroit Lions, 10-38. The Chargers drop to 7-8 on the season, while the Lions improve to 10-5.
In this weekly article, Pro Football Spotlight will bring you the blocking performances against the recent opponent, as well as some additional data. For example: Did you know that the backs and tight ends had a great day blocking against the Lions?
Let’s take a look at those blocking grades…

| Did the lineman get the job done or not? These grades are good for understanding value for a team and not necessarily for comparing across teams. A game in the mid 80s to 90% is a decent score. | How often did the offensive lineman dominate the block or how often did he get dominated? These scores are good for comparing across teams and finding the most dominant lineman in the league. | Anything over zero is a good score. The more over zero the more the lineman dominated the defender. Each lineman is scored a minus for being dominated, a zero for a draw, or a plus for dominating the defender. | The number of success over failures for the lineman when blocking linebackers and safeties on the second level. The lineman must be athletic to accomplish a high second level score. |

Run Blocking Notes:
- At 10:10 in the 1st quarter, Antonio Gates has a very nice run block. Lot’s of energy, tries to drive the defender. I haven’t seen Gates put that much energy in a block, all year. Great job!
- Gates has a nice run blocking day…makes all his blocks, with energy.
- At 6:00 in the 2nd quarter, Randy McMichael has a nice down block to get the play outside. You can see him in the pic, below. He is in the middle of the pile, as Vasquez and Hester get to the outside.

- At 9:10 in the 3rd quarter, there are some great blocks by Jacob Hester and Randy McMichael. McMichael sets the edge on the left side of the formation and Hester takes out a 2nd level defender…you can see him, below.

- Again, nice day run blocking by the Chargers tight ends and backs. Lots of effort…we like!

Each lineman is scored a minus for being dominated, a zero for a draw, or a plus for dominating the block. | How often did the offensive lineman give up pressure on the quarterback? Every once and a while a lineman can do his job but give up pressure on the QB. This stat will help glean more info from the line grades. | How often did the offensive coordinator provide help for a tough defender or a struggling lineman. Yea, two lineman ended up with the same grade…but how much help did either of them get? |

Pass Blocking Notes:
- At 10:35 in the 3rd quarter, Ryan Mathews doesn’t pick up the blitz, and Rivers is pressured.
- Randy McMichael gets the most reps in pass protection. He ends the day with a 90% run assignment grade.
- Mike Tolbert is the only other defender with any reps of significance. He does a nice job.
