This week, the Raiders will take on the Green Bay Packers. The Packers bring with them a 12-0 record and are converting 49% (2nd in NFL) of their 3rd downs and scoring 64% (4th in NFL) of the time, when in the red zone.
In this weekly article, Pro Football Spotlight will bring you the upcoming opponent’s rushing and passing tendencies, as well as some additional data and observations. For example: Did you know that the Packers are 29th in the NFL in rushing yards, per play?
Every team in the NFL has strengths and weaknesses, tendencies, and go-to guys. They have plays they like to call during tight situations or directions they like to run when in the middle of the football field.
Let’s take a look at the rest of those tendencies…
Rushing Offense

- PFS is trying out a new slider (chart above). You first see the opponents offensive run tendencies…but if you click on the ribbon on the right you will see the Raiders run defense. If you click the ribbon (grey column) on the right you will see how opponents are doing against the Raiders’ defense. Hope you like it.
- The Packers don’t run the ball nearly as much as they pass it. But when they run it…the right end appears to be Green Bay’s favorite area. The Packers have attempted to run the ball around the right end 75 times, which is the most in the NFL.
- Like most teams, Green Bay appears to like to take advantage of the soft spot in a team’s 3-4 defense, the middle. Currently, the Packers have attempted 55 runs at the center of the formation.
- The Packers’ best production comes when they attempt to run the ball on the right side of the formation. The right guard area is getting them 6.4 yards, per attempt, and the right tackle area is getting them 4.6 yards, per attempt.
- The Raiders are having trouble stopping the run this year…and are far better at defending against the pass. That would seem to be a plus for Oakland.
- Oakland is giving up 7.9 yards, per attempt, around the right end (32 in NFL). So, since the Packers like to run in that location, look for them to attack the Raiders on that side of the formation.

Passing Notes:
- The Packers have one of the best passing attacks in the NFL. And they really like to throw the ball.
- Green Bay appears to be able to throw the ball in any zone, but they prefer to throw it to the right side of the field. They only rank 22nd in the NFL in attempts to the deep left zone and 32nd in the NFL in attempts to the short left zone. However, Green Bay is completing 56% (2nd in NFL) and 47% (2nd in NFL) of their passes to those zones.
- Green Bay has thrown the ball 173 times (3rd in NFL) to the short right side of the field. They are also completing 78% of their throws to that zone.
- The Packers against the Oakland secondary will be an interesting one. The Raiders are only giving up a 33% completion rate in each of the deep zones. That ranks as high as 4th in the NFL in some zones. And are not ranked lower than 7th in the NFL in completion percentage surrendered to any of the short zones.
- The Packers like to pass, and they are good at it. Look for Green Bay to put the ball in the air and challenge that secondary that has been doing so well this year.
