Chargers vs Lions Week #16: Analyzing Detroit’s Offensive Tendencies

Analyzing Tendencies Chargers

The Chargers take on the Chicago Bears this Sunday. The Bears are bringing with them a 3rd down conversion rate of 33% (25th in NFL) and a red zone efficiency rate of 59% (5th in NFL).

In this weekly article, Pro Football Spotlight will bring you the upcoming opponent’s rushing and passing tendencies, as well as some additional data and observations. For example: Did you know that the Detroit Lions are ranked 5th in the NFL in passing yards per game?

Every team in the NFL has strengths and weaknesses, tendencies, and go-to guys. They have plays they like to call during tight situations or directions they like to run when in the middle of the football field.

Let’s take a look at the rest of those tendencies…

Rushing Notes:

  • Above, is a new slider graph we are trying at PFS. First, you will see the opponent run tendencies. If you click the ribbon (grey column) on the right you will see how opponents are doing against the Chargers’ defense. Hope you like it.
  • The Detroit Lions have ran the ball 93 times to the center of the formation.  But that is only 15th in the NFL in number of attempts.
  • Detroit, however, is ranked 9th in the NFL in the number of attempts toward the right tackle, with 51 attempts.  Not only that, but they are getting 6.6 yards per attempt in that area (4th in NFL).
  • They are also ranked 11th in the NFL in the number of attempts toward the left tackle…but are not getting the yards per attempt like they are on the other side.
  • Unfortunately, the Chargers are giving up 6.0 yards per attempt over the right tackle area (26th in NFL).  Since the Lions like to run in that area, and that is one of the Charger soft spots…look for Detroit to attack that area.
  • On the other side, the left tackle area, the Chargers are more stingy and are giving up only 3.4 yards per attempt (7th best in NFL).

TARGET CHART

Passing Notes:

  • The Lions love to throw the ball to the short zones.  You don’t have numbers like that…and not have a game plan or tendency to one area.
  • Detroit is ranked 1st in the NFL in the number of attempts to the short right zone.
  • The Lions might like to throw it to the short right side of the field, but they have only completed 60% of those passes (25th in NFL).
  • They have completed 73%  (6th in NFL) of their passes to the short middle zone, however.
  • The Lions appear to be equally dangerous in every deep zone.  They are consistently getting around 40% of their passes completed to each of those deep zones.
  • The Chargers are giving up a 71% completion % to the short right zone.  Which is just what the Lions want to see.  Look for Detroit to attack the short right zone a little bit more this week.
