
The Denver Broncos lost to the Buffalo Bills, 14-40. The Broncos move to 8-7 on the season while the Bills improve to 6-9.
In this weekly article, Pro Football Spotlight will bring you the blocking performances of the recent Broncos game, as well as some additional data. For example: Did you know that Spencer Larsen had an off day run blocking against the Bills?
Let’s take a look at those blocking grades…

Team Run Blocking | Power Blocking | Power Score | 2nd Level Blocks | ||||
Did the lineman get the job done or not? These grades are good for understanding value for a team and not necessarily for comparing across teams. A game in the mid 80s to 90% is a decent score. | How often did the offensive lineman dominate the block or how often did he get dominated? These scores are good for comparing across teams and finding the most dominant lineman in the league. | Anything over zero is a good score. The more over zero the more the lineman dominated the defender. Each lineman is scored a minus for being dominated, a zero for a draw, or a plus for dominating the defender. | The number of success over failures for the lineman when blocking linebackers and safeties on the second level. The lineman must be athletic to accomplish a high second level score. |
Run Blocking Notes:
- At 5:00 in the 1st quarter, Spencer Larsen leads the play to the left and after he engages the defender, the defender is able to get off the block and make the tackle.
- At 14:57 in the 2nd quarter, Larsen leads the play up the middle and is met by a linebacker, pushed back, and the defender makes the play.
- At 5:34 in the 2nd quarter, Daniel Fells misses a backside block. His defender makes the tackle.
- 4:54 in the 2nd quarter, Fells gets a nice 2nd level block but Virgil Green is unable to hold his block and his defender makes the tackle. You can see them in the pic, below.

- 3:11 in the 2nd quarter, Green misses a block when the play is run directly at the center of the formation.
- Virgil Green ends the day with a 71% run assignment grade.

Did the lineman get the job done or not? These grades are good for understanding value for a team and not necessarily for comparing across teams. A game in the 90% is a good score for pass blocking. | How often did the offensive lineman dominate the block or how often did he get dominated? Each lineman is scored a minus for being dominated, a zero for a draw, or a plus for dominating the block. | How often did the offensive lineman give up pressure on the quarterback? Every once and a while a lineman can do his job but give up pressure on the QB. This stat will help glean more info from the line grades. | How often did the offensive coordinator provide help for a tough defender or a struggling lineman. Yea, two lineman ended up with the same grade…but how much help did either of them get? |
Pass Blocking Notes:
- It is obvious that the Bronco’s coaching staff is becoming more confident in their offensive lineman’s pass protection. The tight ends and backs really don’t have a lot of reps in pass protection in the game against the Bills.
- Danial Fells ends the day with a 98% pass assignment grade.
- At 1:44 in the 3rd quarter, Daniel Fells has a nice solo pass block. It is nice to have a tight end that can be counted on to pass block from time to time. You can see him in the pick, below.
